Fiction. PRISM AND GRADED MONOTONY is rope for your neck, singular, a plurality of threads. Death and survival are the sum; myriad are the weird parts that compose it. Black Death, accident-framed death, death as commonplace, death in the cycle of life, survival against death, survival through death—these modes are all identified within the study of life that is Prism. It is an existential philosophy, a companion piece to the violent commentary of Nietzsche.

This is an intriguing book. It turns out to be a sort of imaginative sequel to Nicholas Culpeper's seventeenth century field guide 'Complete Herbal'. Both of these books compliment each other beautifully. They cover similar ground: Herbal remedies, medicinal properties, astrological prescriptions. This is a novel, though, and it goes further, becoming a sort of psychotropic prose poem about sex, death, inner and outer space, time, love, hate... Like what might happen if William S. Burroughs and Dr. John Dee bumped into each other down their local suburban GP.It's not easy to categorise, this novel, but I found that refreshing. A field guide to the future, maybe? The main thing is that it clearly wasn't written for book clubs or blogs. It's much better than that. A future classic, I suspect. Its time will come.

Dominic Ward's Prism and Graded Monotony reflects an utterly unique blend of beautiful prose, bolstered with experimentation in sentence structure; vivid, unexpected, and sometimes startlingly descriptive language; a poetic sensibility; even a sense evoking a stable, thoughtful form of cut-up.
A splendid, surreal read and ride.

""A survey through shadow and light, Prism and Graded Monotony is a compendium of reflections, projecting untapped futures and recalling golden pasts. Dominic Ward's third novel examines fragments of a corrosive society and fearlessly catalogues all of its calculated poisons. A visionary wander among the living and the dying, Prism is a chemical reaction against the forces of boredom and delusion, an antique house that will haunt the reader for decades to come." - Ben Pullar
