I've only seen Ice T in New Jack City and on SVU, but now I've read his story and have new respect for him and rap/hip hop music, which I've never really liked...Ice T opens his life up and reveals the successes and the Hell...I came away with a respect for someone that I never even thought about except that he played a character on TV...this book is very entertaining and will open your eyes and give you understanding of the street gangs in Calf. , and New York. .not for approval, but for knowledge. .

Always fascinating, this dude has lived one truly unique life. From his time in the Army, to pulling off heists, to inventing gangster rap, Ice-T has done it all. Not to mention his film career and activism. Lots of interesting stories, worth a read if you're into T.
I've watched Ice T on Law and Order SVU for years. This past summer, I enjoyed watching him and his wife on the reality show "Ice Loves Coco"--behind the rough exterior is a heart of gold, and that comes through in this book. Ice traces his way back to his beginnings and doesn't feel the need to cover up or make excuses for anything he did. Did he lead a squeaky clean life growing up? Absolutely not. He's had a COLORFUL life to say the least! He's raw and honest though, and that's what I liked most about the book. You can hear his voice on every page. I've already passed the book on twice and will continue doing so!!
This was a awesome raw, honest and for real as you can get story by Ice. Yes a gangster from the hood with a inspiring story especially for are youth of today, yesterday, and the future. After reading this book you will feel,like I did, I hope, about how one man who came from nothing and his struggling journey to a successful life without forgetting were he came from as well as giving back to the trouble youth of today. As a huge fan, this is a unforgettable story. There's know way you can not be effected, because we all have a little Ice in our life or know someone who does. Truly a READ MUST.....
The book is a great read in terms of honesty, and a life-story that is full of tragedy, danger, humor, and ultimately, success. It comes off as being more spoken, than written, as a lot of other ghost written, celebrity autobiographies do. There are a couple of aspects of it that are annoying. One of which is that Ice T is a very charismatic and wise person. He tends to speak in a voice, though, that is still the language of someone who has not evolved much in his vocabulary or the way he expresses himself. His constant use of old street slang and profanity makes him sound less intelligent than he obviously is. Not sure if that's a gimmick to sound more street, or what. At this point in his life, the whole street cred issue seems tired.
I also agree with several other reviewers that the issue of regret or contrition seems blatantly absent from this account of a criminal life that transitioned to something better. He never expresses any real feelings of shame at hurting people financially, emotionally, or in any other way. So the impression one gets is not one of "Redemption", as the title states, but just a recounting of actions throughout his life that he is neither ashamed of, or has tried to make right. The only sense that the reader gets from the transitional aspect of this book is I was slick, I got away with it, and even though most of my friends got arrested, jailed, or killed, I'm still living the good life. It comes off as more smug than truly self-analytical.

There is a curious dichotomy in his analysis of life. He is a brilliant commentator on society and the business world, as well as personal relationships. The breakdown of every business situation into pimps and ho's is inane and overly simplistic. His instincts of survival and the overall stories of having triumphed over a very harsh childhood are inspirational. He's a complex individual. I enjoyed the book and would recommend it.
