After Brendan and his mother witness a completely random tragedy, his carefully controlled life begins to fall apart. First he starts having nightmares and panic attacks, and then he loses focus in his daily life. His board of directors insists he take a vacation at a so-called "relaxation destination", and to make matters worse, they've hired newly minted psychiatrist, Dr. Dirk Melovitch, to accompany him.

Dirk, whose job it is to help Brendan learn to relax, walks into the lobby of Brendan's hotel wearing a borrowed suit and an attitude that rubs Brendan the wrong way from the moment they meet. They head for the airport and their carefully planned itinerary goes out the window, one small setback at a time.

From the airports of New York and Atlanta, to the long, lonely highways of Texas, to an upscale rehab destination in Santa Fe, Brendan and Dirk each try to gain the upper hand until both find out that it's not just life that can get a guy all stirred up.

Oh another story full of good things all around. I just loved the story from the beginning to end. The characters played off one another with a great bit of mischief and joy. So yes this a book you should take a chance on and read. Joe

All Stirred Up
All Stirred Up is the sequel to Stirring Up Trouble. The well written, outstanding plot is Brendan's journey to wellness, combined with the powerful curatives of love and laughter. The storyline gives realistic insight, in relation to a sensitive subject, along with the recovery course of action. Brendan's life begins to fall apart after Brendan and his mother witness a horrendous accident. He's endured months of suffering through loss of focus on work, nightmares as well as panic attacks. The departure from his normal personality has a negative impact on Brendan's physical and mental health. Brendan realizes he cannot win this battle alone, so he surrenders to professional help in finding his misplaced identity. Brendan accepts that his life will never be the same as it was, yet learning new coping skills brings about a level of contentment.

Dirk, whose job it is to help Brendan learn to relax, quickly concludes he cannot resist his attraction to Brendan. Intelligent along with being a very well trained psychiatrist, Dirk must undergo the punishment for Conflict of Interest issues after he tumbles into intimate moments with Brendan. Brendan and Dirk are exceedingly well matched. The interaction between them is hilarious. Both men have strong willed "take charge" attitudes. However, when it comes to intimacy, they are equally considerate to each other, as illustrated in the marvelously passionate scorching love scenes. The talented ZA Maxfield has created a superb and extremely enjoyable saga. I recommend All Stirred Up to anyone who enjoys this genre.
ZA Maxfield is very skilled at concocting believable characters, "real" and often humorous dialogue, and steamy sex scenes that ring true to me as a gay man. Then why am I not rating this 4 or 5 stars? One of the characters breaches professional ethics in a fundamental way. This is what sticks with me most about this book. If you have ever been vulnerable and needed help, or known someone who has been vulnerable and needed help, this violation may be particularly disturbing. Some might say, "It's fiction - a fantasy! What's the big woop?" I have many fiction books on my wooden and virtual bookshelves that I enjoy a great deal. One thing they don't do is turn morality on it's head and excuse behavior that can be profoundly injurious to someone. Maxfield wrestles with this in the book to some extent, but ultimately gives this character a "pass" and attempts to depict him as likeable and redeemed. For my part, I can't get past what this character did, and I can only imagine that a continued relationship with him will be fundamentally warped and unhealthy.
Brendan has watched a truck plow through countless innocent bystanders. It barely missed his mom, because he threw her to the ground, breaking her arm. His ensuing psychological symptoms interfere with work. So his company’s Board of Directors insists he attend to rehab. Due to his panic attacks while travelling, the very posh facility sends a psychiatrist to fetch him. They are instantly attracted. Thankfully ZA Maxfield has the class to use a technicality and end their professional relationship before the novel becomes another inappropriate, clichéd therapist/patient romance.

The exchange between the two men, as they size one another up, is priceless. Dirk, age 27, looks younger. After Brendan, age 35, suggests Dirk is a busboy his brother hired to pretend to be the doctor, and calls Dirk “Doogie,” Dirk strikes back. “Some men realize that age thirty-five is a turning point, don’t they? You’re on the forced march to forty. It’s not as easy to find romance, the hair is going and the libido slows down. Guys my age, well, we do all right for ourselves, but men over that magical thirty-five mark must have either power or money to do the same brisk business in the bedroom they once did. That’s a fact of life … (But with) the wonderful erectile dysfunction drugs that recently found their way to the market, you should be able to find some kind of companionship for years to come.”

When the good doctor learns Brendan and his brother are twins, Brendan pays him back. “Brendan headed off all the usual questions. ’We never had a language; I don’t feel it when he’s in pain. We don’t communicate telepathically, but I always know when he’s gotten laid. He’s shy and he can’t hide it.”

Again, thank God ZAM avoided the patient/therapist romance, because now we have a pissing match. Again Dirk ups the ante. He asks if it bothers Brendan when his brother gets laid. “Do you ever wish you’d gotten to someone first … I just mean did you ever change places to be with a lover? Did you ever want someone your brother was with so badly that you let them think they were with him? Did you ever f..k someone who belonged to him? Did you ever slip into his shoes in the most primal, sexual way?” And would pull the review if any more was revealed.

At this point the reader has just started a book filled with hysterical exchanges, hot love scenes and a romance between two alphas which surprises and humbles each of them. I read ZA Maxfield for these crystal clear dew drops of verbal parries and sublime wording. But as a psychologist, I had to deduct a star for using inaccurate PTSD symptoms as plot devises.

This is a stand alone book, but the epilogue is funnier if you first read “Stirring Up Trouble.” Both novels are equally delectable, terrific reads I highly recommend.
It's not often I laugh out loud when reading an M/M romance, but I did while reading "All Stirred Up." Z.A. Maxfield always seems to stretch the boundaries of the genre, and ends up writing a book that is deeper, more subtle, far more interesting, and in this case funnier, than the average romance. There are not many authors whose books I will buy without reading any reviews, but she is definitely one of them.

Buy this book. You won't regret it.
A great follow up.
I have read many of Z.A Maxfield's books and this one was not a great representation of what I like best about her works - if you are new to this author suggest you try some of her other books - St. Nachos series is wonderful or Drawn Together,
This is a perfect little book. The dialogue and chapter header quotes had me actually laughing out loud. Like, truly. I never do that. This is distilled Maxfield, so sip carefully and savor. You'll be glad you did.
